Three Attributes of Automatic Car Wash Machines
After many years of working with automatic car wash machines, I hadn’t carefully considered the true significance of this product until recently. Through numerous conversations with clients from various industries, I have gained new insights into the role and positioning of automatic car wash machines in the industry. Simply put, automatic car wash machines have three product attributes: helping customers make money, helping customers save money, and providing emotional value for those washing cars.

Helping Customers Make Money
To achieve this product attribute, automatic car wash machines need to have high operational efficiency, attractive designs, and comprehensive features. For investors purchasing an automatic car wash machine, the more cars washed within a specific time frame, the more pronounced the effect of helping customers make money. For example, an efficient automatic car wash machine installed at a gas station can operate for several hours a day, washing nearly a thousand cars, effectively supporting the promise of free car washes for fuel customers. However, if the car wash machine operates slowly and struggles to wash many cars in a day, it will fail to help customers make money effectively.
Helping Customers Save Money
Gas stations are profit-oriented entities, where the role of automatic car wash machines is primarily focused on helping customers make money. In contrast, in certain organizations, agencies, schools, and hospitals that provide welfare-oriented car wash services, the automatic car wash machine's role is more about helping customers save money. For instance, in some government agencies, the best way to provide car wash benefits for employees is to install an automatic car wash machine. Compared to setting up a dedicated car wash team with additional management staff, the savings from using an automatic car wash machine can be quite significant.
Providing Emotional Value for Car Washers
Whether driving or riding in a car, people prefer not to see a vehicle covered in bird droppings, dirt, and dust; they favor a car with clear windows and shiny paint. When we hail a taxi, if the car is dirty inside and out, it can be quite frustrating. If you’re driving to pick someone up, you’ll likely ensure the car is spotless to leave a good impression. As a dirty car rolls through an automatic car wash, watching the vibrant cleaning solution spray under colorful lights, the foam-covered brushes rotate to scrub the entire body, and wax-infused water droplets fall off in succession, the warm winter sunlight streaming through the freshly cleaned glass creates a beautiful moment. At that instant, washing a car feels like a truly delightful experience.
In this process, beyond the pleasure of cleanliness, the car washer should also feel that the experience is worthwhile or even exceeds their expectations. Only when car washers feel they received value for their money will they return for another wash. For manufacturers of automatic car wash machines to achieve these three product attributes, they must start from the design phase, creating products that genuinely help customers make money, save money, and provide value.
Helping customers make money means designing automatic car wash machines to be faster, more durable, and less prone to failure. Helping customers save money involves making operation easier, maintenance simpler, and reducing consumption of water, washing chemicals, and energy. Providing more value means enhancing the washing experience with better cleanliness, drier vehicles, shinier paint, and adding eye-catching lights and music during the wash process.
However, in many countries, automatic car wash industry is still in its early stages of development. Most investors currently prioritize durability in their requirements for automatic car wash machines. This necessitates that manufacturers start from the realities of the country, ensuring that products are robust and capable of long-term use even with low-frequency maintenance. In this ongoing process, incremental improvements in the washing experience and the pursuit of product value realization are essential.
